"I don't want your money, honey, I want your love!"
The night before I took my maths A level, I went to see Transvision Vamp in concert. I was reminded of the above song of theirs when I read the following in today's Times:
Wall Street wives dump hard-up husbands
Rich divorce rate jumps as credit crunch bites
America's credit crunch is putting the squeeze on the marriages of New York's superwealthy as a record number of couples with $10 million or more in assets sue for divorce.
It goes on to quote the lawyer who represented Rudolph Giuliani, the former Mayor of New York, and Mike Tyson's former wife in their recent divorces: “Money's really all that it's about, the husbands know it, but the wives will never say it. I've been doing this for years. I know, the judge knows, though you can't prove it."
So much for "for richer, for poorer" ... What are the foundations of your closest relationships? Do you handle love as a disposable commodity or a covenantal commitment?
Maybe Tina Turner was being more honest than Wendy James when she asked, "What's love got to do with it?"
