Otherwise, you will only lose your time and nerves. There was a good film on the torrent search engine about two people who found each other in a social network. It describes all the pros and cons of distant relations, so it's worth while watching. 
And regarding the described case, it only proves my point of view. The man who killed his wife, lived in the imaginary world. And it was so important to him that he became obsessed.
