Three years of political turmoil and seeming indecision since the 'election that never was' in 2007, the British public will now have a chance to give its verdict on Gordon Brown's Government.
As the campaign begins in earnest, it is worth repeating a couple of paragraphs from the foreword of Votewise Now! by Joel Edwards:
'You don’t need to be a political scientist to know that British politics and relationships stand at an important cross roads. How we vote and how we govern in the years ahead will be about much more than British politics. We are a key member of the global political village and what we do over the next decade will have global repercussions. And that political village is shifting its composition and global chemistry with amazing frequency across Europe and America.
'Leaders cannot lead without a mandate and the inexorable democratisation of our nations which is spreading through business and the ballot is changing the political landscape from America to Iraq. When we enter the privacy of the ballot what we do there contributes to the cacophony of voices and the decisions which will shape the future of our village.'
