Forming a Christian Mind Conference

The second Forming a Christian Mind conference took place in April 2014, exploring the theme of how to engage with the secular mind.  Seminar speakers from a range of disciplines game their input and participated in a plenary discussion, all of which can be viewed below.

Our keynote speaker was Prof Julian Rivers, Professor of Jurisprudence at the University of Bristol Law School and Warden of Wills Hall.  He is also a founder member of the Cambridge Papers writing group, and an editor-in-chief of the Oxford Journal of Law and Religion.

In his plenary lecture, Prof Rivers delved into the idea of a secular university. The vast majority of British academics work in institutions which are, or which they assume to be, ‘secular’. Sometimes that assumption is expressed in ways hostile to Christian contributions to the scholarly enterprise. This lecture explored how the concept of a secular university is best formulated, the extent to which Christians can support such an ideal, and some ways that Christian believers might develop a distinctive voice in such a context.
