Recycling Is Not Enough!

Posted: 16 April 2008

In a catchy new YouTube video, the Jubilee Centre warns that further world food shortages are on the cards if more isn't done soon to care for the environment. To support this claim, we highlight shocking statistics - like the fact that we're catching more fish than are breeding, then throwing half of them back under European regulations.

We go on to argue that people should care about the environment because God cares.  "The very first commandment He gave to humankind was to rule over and steward His creation," says Cambridge University Professor Bob White.  "It's as if we are vice-regents on His behalf."

"It's great that people are so environment-conscious these days, but just recycling the odd carrier bag or tin can - good though that is - isn't enough," explains executive director John Hayward.  "We hear constant apocalyptic warnings over possible future global warming, making us deaf to the cries of those who are already suffering a world food shortage that is only going to get worse"

In another video, featuring an interview with former Royal Society Vice President and Foreign Secretary Sir Brian Heap, we previously made the case that in order to feed the planet’s rapidly increasing population the world needs to be far more open to the use of genetically modified crops.

In a previous report, made in cooperation with World Vision, we made a number of practical suggestions about how we can all improve the environment, including buying locally-produced food, eating less meat, and sharing ownership of items that are costly and used only occasionally.
