The Relational State of Europe Snapshot photograph

The Relational State of Europe Snapshot

Gemma Hooper, May 2013

Price: FREE

The Schuman Centre's State of Europe Forum, held on 9th May each year, brings together Christian leaders from around the continent to evaluate Europe today in the light of the vision of EU Founding Father, Robert Schuman, for Europe as a 'community of peoples deeply rooted in Christian values': equality, freedom, solidarity and peace.

The sponsors of the Forum, ECPF, commissioned Jubilee Centre, in collaboration with Relationships Global and Relationships Foundation, to write a report on the quality of family, community, economic, and political relationships across the continent.

The Snapshot provides a platform for exploring how economic, political and social problems are ultimately relational issues, since their causes and consequences are largely in the realm of relationships. This analysis helps to point towards an alternative, relational narrative to individualism as the basis for public policy and national life.

This relational framework captures the vision of Schuman and the other founding fathers of modern Europe more effectively than the narrow economic view which increasingly dominates the political agenda. More importantly, it is a biblically rooted framework which offers a Christian basis for social reform.

New way to access Jubilee Centre podcasts photograph

New way to access Jubilee Centre podcasts

Jonathan Tame, April 2013

Price: FREE

Unfortunately the media company which was uploading our podcasts to iTunes is no longer working with audio files. As a result there are currently two Jubilee Centre accounts in iTunes, and all podcasts up to the end of 2011 are on the old account, which is accessible here:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/jubilee-centre/id319798824

Until we have resolved this problem, please access all pre-2012 podcasts directly by using the above link, as the buttons on the individual resource pages will send you to the new Jubilee Centre account, which only has the most recent podcasts.

We apologise for this inconvenience, and hope you can still find the recording you are looking for!

The Family and Sexual Ethics: Christian Foundations and Public Values photograph

The Family and Sexual Ethics: Christian Foundations and Public Values

Sally Bertlin (Editor), February 2013

Price: FREE

'The Family and Sexual Ethics: Christian Foundations and Public Values' was an international conference held in Hong Kong in May 2011, organised by the Hong Kong Baptist University and the Jubilee Centre.

In recent years there has been a growing international interest and concern about the pressures of the environment and the consequences of this for the long-term survival of the planet. However, relatively little attention has been paid to the breakdown of the family and its consequences for the ecology of the planet. Family breakdown is being driven partly by divorce and partly by today's sexual ethics, which then impact on rates of family formation and disintegration.

On the strength of Jubilee Centre's sexual ethics work over recent years, we mobilised a team of scholars, including Jonathan Burnside, Jeremy Ive, Dale Kuehne, Jennifer Roback Morse and Michael Schluter, who presented papers together with a group of Chinese academics.

This report is a collection of ten short papers from the conference, each under two pages long to ensure as wide a readership as possible.

The Jubilee Roadmap photograph

The Jubilee Roadmap

Guy Brandon, February 2013

Price: £2.95

This booklet offers a brief but comprehensive introduction to the Jubilee Centre's work - a kind of 'primer' to our thinking.

The Jubilee Roadmap shows two alternative directions of travel for eight major themes in biblical law: Family, Property, Community, Government, Finance and the Economy, Welfare, Rest, and Justice. One direction reflects the prevailing thinking based on individualism, while the other - the road less travelled - points towards a society based on good and right relationships. The booklet explores the differences between our modern secular approach and the biblical ideal, and how we might start to move from one to the other.

Redefining Marriage: the case for caution photograph

Redefining Marriage: the case for caution

Julian Rivers, October 2012   6 comments

Price: £0.99 (free online)

The Government's proposal to introduce same-sex marriage seems to rest on reasons of equality, stability and convenience. But on closer inspection, these are respectively incomplete, speculative and negligible. As currently defined, marriage secures the equal value of men and women. It also promotes the welfare of children. By contrast, the new definition of marriage will unavoidably call into question its exclusivity, its permanence and even its sexual nature. Such an unravelling of marriage is too high a price to pay for a proposal which fulfils no practical legal need.

From Generation 2 Generation

Edited by Hannah Petra, May 2012

Price: £4.99

Jubilee Centre is very pleased to announce the publication of From Generation 2 Generation. This book is a fully updated and revised edition of From Generation to Generation, a work written 20 years ago when issues of care in later life were already attracting concern. It explores the significant hardships facing older people and their carers in the UK today, before re-evaluating these through a biblical lens. By first exploring the Old and New Testaments' norms and values around later life and then translating and applying this framework to our own situation, the authors offer some profound insights into how we might begin to address the challenges facing us over the coming years.

As the proportion and number of older people in our population continue to increase, a unique combination of factors has come together to create a 'perfect storm' around issues of care in later life. Improvements in healthcare have meant that life expectancy has risen by around fifteen years since the end of the Second World War, and in the last year the Baby Boom generation - those born in the two decades since the war - have begun to retire. As they do so, a large and comparatively wealthy cohort of people will move from being taxpayers to become net recipients from the state, supported by a shrinking workforce. This inverted pyramid of provision takes place against a backdrop of economic stagnation and public spending cuts.

This book challenges us individually, as a society and as the Church.

Free sex: Who pays? photograph

Free sex: Who pays?

Guy Brandon, January 2012   6 comments

Price: £0.99 (free online)

Rather than addressing fundamental moral issues around sexual freedom, this paper starts with our culture’s premise by taking a utilitarian approach and exploring the financial impacts. This is in line with the common assumption that what truly matters for public policy can be quantified. It argues that significant costs of sexual freedom are imposed on society as a whole, rather than borne solely by the individuals most directly involved. This represents an enormous moral hazard and, as a result, unsustainable and unjust public expenditure. The paper then explores ways to address this, the most compelling of which is the Bible’s emphasis on rootedness and group responsibility.

Cohabitation: An Alternative to Marriage? photograph

Cohabitation: An Alternative to Marriage?

John Hayward & Guy Brandon, June 2011

Price: FREE

Cohabitation serves a range of purposes and masks a wide variety of commitment levels: it cannot be considered solely as an alternative to marriage, as is its popular perception. Building on the Jubilee Centre's 2010 report into cohabitation trends, and based on even more recent data from the United Kingdom Household Longitudinal Study, this year-by-year analysis reveals a clearer picture of how trends have changed over time – and continue to change – and a better understanding of the present situation. This allows for a broader range of conclusions and a better understanding of how cohabitation itself is viewed by couples today, compared to attitudes in previous decades.
