Summer School

…the people who know their God shall be strong, and take action. Daniel 11:32

Each year, the Jubilee Centre runs its unique three-day Summer School programme, designed to equip Christians to become social reformers in the 21st Century.

Westminster College

Westminster College, location for the 2018 Summer School

Why the Summer School?

Over the centuries Christians have cared for the broken and outcast, challenged corruption, and established initiatives to move society closer to God’s intentions and ideals. The Social Reformers Summer School lays the foundations for social transformation and helps you develop strategies for engagement in your own context and calling.

Who is it for?

The Summer School is designed for people aged between 20 and 40 who are recent graduates, young professionals and others in business, public services or the charity sector.

The 2019 Summer School: Dates and Speakers tbc

The 2018 Summer School:

The most recent Social Reformers Summer School took place on the 12th—15th July at Westminster College, Cambridge.

Speakers:

Our 2018 speakers included Craig Bartholomew, Danny Kruger, Charles and Jill McLachlan, Caroline Pomeroy, Jonathan Rushworth, Michael Schluter, Julie Smith and Gareth Wallace, who brought together far-reaching expertise from diverse sectors, including politics, charity, business and law.

Programme:

Day 1: Profiles of social reformers.
The School began by looking at the lives of reformers such as Toyohiko Kagawa and Elizabeth Fry, and exploring what it takes to be someone God uses to make a lasting impact.
Day 2: Strategy for social reform.
Many people want to get involved in social justice issues, but what is a specifically biblical approach to changing society? We considered the biblical and relational framework for social reform advocated by the Jubilee Centre, alongside case studies from different sectors of society.
Day 3: ‘Where do I start?’
Through a comprehensive workshop participants learnt how to define the problem, build a team and design a strategy for leading initiatives that make a lasting impact on people’s lives and wider society.

Activities:

The Summer School included lectures, workshops, films, group discussions and collaboration, along with a Christian heritage walking tour and a gala dinner.

Feedback from 2017 Attendees:

‘The school will give you the toolkit to help understand, interpret and apply biblical teaching to the world today in the areas of politics, economics and social policy.  It will also help you to build relationships that will make you succeed and thrive.’  – Ugbana, UK

‘This is a great event to reinvigorate your passions for positive change, structure your thinking and meet some remarkable individuals.’ –  Artem, Ukraine

‘God calls Christians to boldly distinctive living – to be salt and light in whatever situation he places them in.  If you want to know what that means for you or how to lean into that call [then] the Summer School will provide you with wisdom, teaching and space to reflect.’ – Katherine, UK
